In the Best Interest of the Children is an educational
seminar designed to help parents focus on the needs of their children during times of stress within the family. The
seminar is presented in the Alapaha, Southern, and Waycross Judicial Circuits in South Georgia. While the
class is required of parents involved in a divorce, change of custody, change of visitation, legitimation, or any other domestic
relations matter where children under the age of 18 are involved, the material presented is helpful to any parent or
grandparent, or anyone else who cares about the needs of children.
Both parents are required to attend
the class, but are not required to attend together. The sooner you attend, the sooner you'll be able to put into place
the practices that will safeguard your children from the emotional harm that is so often associated with divorce.
You'll be given a handbook for parents, will listen to a speaker, and view various role plays between parents with
a child sometimes involved in the scenes. Infomation presented will help you understand some of the feelings you're
experiencing now; it will also help you see things through the eyes of your children. The program will
present helpful suggestions regarding communication between parents, making visitation work, the importance of providing boundaries
and guidelines for children, and ways to build your child's self-esteem and confidence. Educators
and daycare workers can also benefit from the material, since so often they are dealing with children of divorce. Anyone
attending the class can gain a better understanding of how the process of divorce affects children - and how to safeguard
them during that process.
